Page 90 – Lecture
A break from the action as Sabrina is confronted with her attitude following the last fight card and was coming out of it on her own, but let’s see what a talking to from her mentor, Marina can do. One of the more talky pages and not much to be said for Sabrina except she knows when to be quiet and listen especially since it can be hard to listen to criticism.
This page was written mostly by my good friend, Justin Riley and its always a pleasure to work with him, even on a limited basis like a page. He’s also been a great sounding board and I’ve literally rambled on and on about Rival Angels with him. Look for some more work from him in the future as he’s writing a story about Sun’s early days. And he just had a baby, so congratulations on little Niamh Karen Rose Riley!
This happens to be one of my favorite pages so far. I like how my art looks and I like the colors. And it looks like someone is getting worked over in the TV screen but its nigh impossible to figure out who or what’s going on. Never fear, we’ll be diving back into the wrestling action on Monday!
GO MARINA! That’s exactly what Sabrina needs to hear. That, and she needs someone to tell her about Vincent. But the Vincent revelation can wait.
I’d have to say that I think Brooke is getting kicked (or stomped, maybe) in the head by one of the Cat Girls.
Congrats to Justin. And I love the name of his blog.

WOAH!!!The art..Very Very nice…Well Done..
On the T.V. I noticed Brooke got her faced kicked!! I just can’t believe it.. She’s strong, and then got kick on the faced..Tsk Tsk.. and by the way, where’s Krystin. she should be helping Brooke, could it be a sabotage? Krystin won’t tag Brooke.
Good thing, I’m aiming for the catgirls to win.
I really don’t the the message of that advice Marina gave? Trying to win? stumbling assward to win? is she means that, dominate your opponent, show no mercy?
and how come Marina knows, Sabrina got into a bar fights? could it be Brooke? I suspected have to do something, next time we know Marina saying to Sabrina “don’t go dating Vincent”, it’s kinda like Brooke made some gossip, and told Marina that Sabrina got berserk on the bar, and started punching people and then punch Krystin.
but I agree on Marina on this point, do go fighting at the bar and losing cool, but could this advice wait until the end of the match.
I kinda felt that Marina, is like pressuring Sabrina, it’s very bad timing, I might say, Sabrina against Loretta Diaz, then suddenly Marina came over to pressure Sabrina.
Small Panel 2: Look at Sabrina, she’s became worried. at first she’s well, cool.. I mean cool as in Ultracool. then when Marina lecture her, Sabrina seems confuse.
Small Panel 4: Sabrina just sat down and listen to Marina, and looking at her she seems confuse, I think her strategy against just got crack up.
I think it’s the wrong time for Marina telling those things to Sabrina, maybe after the match, not before the match.
Here’s an advice to Sabrina. focus on the match, Dominate Loretta, show no mercy. Fight as if your life depends on it (That’s what Triple H stated before he got the WWE title) and after you win, grabs the microphone and stepped on Loretta and say it on Loretta’s face “I….AM….ULTRAGIRL” then spit on Loretta’s face. That will be Ultracool.. 😀
Why did Marina gave advice to Sabrina, Only.. how about Sun? why she didn’t gave advice to Sun?
But M.G.C. that would not be Ultragirl. That spitting in the face stuff I mean. Ultragirl is a babyface. She needs to act like it. She’s been acting like a Tweener lately. That’s the core of her advice. Ultragirl -was- a confident and aggressive wrestler without ever sacrificing her beliefs and her drive to succeed and doing it fair and legit. She hasn’t been any of those things lately.
And my fingers are too big for a laptop keyboard so I accidentally backed up my browser while gwtting ready to type this so you got it on the wrong day. Syupid fat fingers.
First of all, looking back at Panel 1.. Sabrina looks pretty good shape, did she gain a few pound? still Sabrina is pretty.
looking back at episode 4 and 5. then comparing it into this episode, Sabrina looked kinda shock, her facial expression kinda looks like “Wah! my wins is not enough” in the mini panel 4.
I have a feeling that, one day.. Sabrina will kick Marina’s teeth down her throut.
I was wondering why is Marina always sticking on Sabrina. there’s Sun, Brooke and Krystin really might need help. looking at the T.V. Brooke’s really in trouble, why not help them, if she really likes to help rookies.
I’m suspecting Marina have something bad planning on Sabrina, more devious than Brooke’s plan. is like Marina will puts Sabrina on top girl in the Rival Angels, then drop her like a rock.
if Marina intend to help Sabrina, maybe helping her giving tips on like counter-attack, reversals, and observing Loretta weak-spots. it will really help Sabrina, but this lecture, I think she’s giving Sabrina pressure.
I like Sabrina to win this match against Loretta, so she can get revege on what Loretta did, the steel chair, and the loss in the development territory. but I won’t don’t want to see her win against “Red Jen” Jennifer Needles.
Something about panel 1 seems not quite right… compared to panel 3 Sabrina’s eyes look to be too small and too high up on her face. Is this a perspective issue?
That Marina needs to give this lecture the night of the match has disturbingh implicatios obout the Rival Angels coaching…
Brooke and Krystin don’t have a plan, but the Catgirls *do*. Unless ‘let’s get the stuffing kicked out of us and then we’ll use thier overconfidence adainst them’ counts as a plan…
A Mouse, yeah Sabrina needed someone to ground her a little bit concerning her attitude of late, which wasn’t bad per se, but wasn’t really Sabrina. So, we just have to see what Sabrina does with this ‘talking to.’ Will she listen or will she discard it. Good eyes there, that is Brooke in the TV screen, and come Monday we’re going to pick up where that is leaving off.
MGC, the TV screen is just a teaser of what’s to come, and you won’t have to wait too long for your questions to be answered. Marina’s talk may have been ill timed but I don’t know that there’s a good time for that sort of thing. If nothing else, Sabrina has two matches ahead of her to figure out what she wants to do. And basically, Marina is telling Sabrina to be herself, not some uber-tough chick that she’s not. Its Sabrina, who’s fun, playful and likes to entertain and hopefully win some matches, but that winning at the cost of your true self isn’t worth it. Could that affect Sabrina’s chances of winning her match against Loretta? Absolutely. Marina is giving advice to Sabrina because she needs it and will listen to her. I don’t know that Brooke and Krystin are ready to listen to someone else’s advice and Sun’s always confident and steady in herself, but we’ll see how she’s doing next week. I don’t know that Marina has anything sinister planned for Sabrina, but it might be interesting to know what Gabrielle would think of Marina’s lecture before a match.
Salazen, no worries on the posting, we like posts here. 😀 Wow, you nailed that a lot better than I did about Sabrina! Yes, that’s what Marina is trying to say, trying to advise but you could make the arguement of the timing of the advice, but I don’t think there’s a good time for that sort of thing.
Roller Derby Fan, I don’t know about panel 1. They might be too small, I really don’t know. I think I’m too ‘close’ to it, so to speak. That being said, panel 1 was a challenge because of the size. I don’t normally draw Sabrina at half that size so there could be some variances there. The Catgirls are wily veterans so they always have a plan but will it be enough to overcome the sheer energy of Krystin and Brooke? Monday will be a good indication of that. 😉 Thinking about it from Marina’s point of view, I think you could argue that this is BEST time to drop that on Sabrina. Kind of a tough love, get your head out of your ass approach. It’s really all in how Sabrina interpets it because right now, she seems a bit blindsided by it.
😀
Thanks for the explanation Albone, so the message simple means to be herself, counter from my advice 😀
and Thanks for clearing up that Marina had no evil plot against Sabrina.
final clarification, So basically Marina is saying that, don’t be a egomaniac right?
Sabrina has two matches ahead of her to figure out what she wants to do..
Sabrina had two matches in one night… cool…
“Ultragirl” Sabrina Mancini VS Loretta Diaz
Then after that match.
“Ultragirl” Sabrina Mancini VS “Red-Jen” Jennifer Needles, right? this will happen in the same night… Cool…Awesome.. now I will see “Red-Jen” Jennifer Needles crush, squash, destroy “Ultragirl” Sabrina Mancini.. hahhahaha..hahahah..
and maybe we’ll see Jennifer Needles stepping on the helpless and knocked out Sabrina..hahahha.. I’m really looking forward seeing this will happen.
Yeah, Sabrina wasn’t an egomaniac to start with, so she shouldn’t start. Basically, Sabrina was bowing to the pressure of being pushed, and the rivals against her in the ring and out (like Brooke) and was trying to be more fierce. Marina’s saying that she doesn’t need it, but its still up to Sabrina to listen to it or not.
I mis-wrote before. Sabrina doesn’t herself have two matches. There are two matches that will happen before she fights Loretta. Brooke/Krystin vs The Catgirls and Sun svs Schoolgirl Valentine. No Jennifer in a match on this fight card, but look for her the next fight card.
First, Sabrina’s right eye in panel 1 does indeed look to be too small… i think it’s the same saize as her left, so perspective-wise needs to be a little longer and taller…
I like your conversation pages. it’s so hard to draw a good conversation without doing the over, over, 2-shot approach.
It’s good that someone still cares about how the younger generation handles themselves in and out of the ring. i wonder who told marina about the little bar fight…
Ahhh, Alan to clarify, note in panel one Sabrinas’s eyes are above the tops of her ears while in panel three they are level with where her earlobes connect with her face. The panel three drawing is consistent with the way she’s been drawn to date. Also, you can compare the Sabrina Wallpaper to panel one, these are both drawn from a POV ahead and above to her right.
What happened is I read the page and wondered ‘who’s that?’. It took me a moment to realize it’s Sabrina. It is a tribute to your drawing skill that there are so few ‘huh?’ moments; there are some comics I can think of where the characters can be annoyingly difficult to tell apart.
Another page with no horizontal lines, in panel one they are almost horizontal but as Sabrina gets more of Marina’s lecture the backgrounds carry the sense of being off balance. Great composition to convey emotions through the dynamics of what many folks would consider a plain locker room.
Alan, I’m enjoying Rival Angels a lot, please don’t take what I’ve said as trying to be demeaning, I just had a ‘huh?’ moment is all. To me your comic comes across as depicting real events, I tend to interpret the images that way. If you had Salvador Dali as a guest artist, then…
Its Sabrina, who’s fun, playful and likes to entertain and hopefully win some matches..
I’ll respect to that
(IMO) I think those type aren’t championship quality? correct me in this.. Triple H, Batista, Shawn Michaels, Edge, Randy Orton and others have big egoes, and which they’ve accomplish big. in which they also entertain, but really hunger for Championship.
If Sabrina will be just being herself, will be good in her, she will win match, I have no doubt about it. but in being herself, I don’t think she’ll be coming quality champion. maybe she can get the Rival Angels T.V. title but she really can’t be a Rival Angels Heavyweight Champion without maximizing her ego. (IMO)
I think even Brenda Rua, have big ego.. since she’s the Rival Angels Heavyweight champion.
Good page. This was a necessary scene. I hope we get some more character development on th coach.
Thanks for pointing that out Jamie, I’ll definitely keep it in mind when I’m drawing, well anyone! I knew that I wanted some consequences for Sabrina’s attitude and its coming down from someone she respects and admire. Being able to do that and make the panels interesting is a bonus and I’m glad I was able to make it interesting artistically. As far as who told Marina, she’s got her ear to the ground, so to speak. That sort of thing is bound to get around.
I always appreciate the comments and I appreciate you as a reader and one who regularly comments! So no worries, if nothing else I can’t fix it if its not broken and its something I’ll keep aware of going forward. Yeah, Salvador’s got himself a unique style, that’s for sure.
You make a good point MGC, that most champions have big egos, except for maybe CM Punk and Sting. That being said, Sabrina’s not even in the tournament, so she’s gotta take care of herself or a title match down the road isn’t going to happen anyways. Of course, most wrestlers believe that being the champion is THE goal and will do anything to get to it. It remains to be seen what Sabrina, or Sun, Brooke or Krystin are willing to do to accomplish this goal.
Thanks Dan! I felt this scene was needed as well and I’m glad it worked. More Marina!! There’s definitely more in store for Marina but probably not for a little bit.
Albone, have you considered drawing things like it at a size that you’re comfortable with and then using that as a reference for drawing it bigger? If you had an opaque projector, then all you’d have to do is use that. 😉 But I doubt you have one, so … that’s not really an option. Anyway, I’m not sure that my first suggestion will be all that helpful either. But, theoretically, if you had a reference, then you could compare the two and find obvious errors in the larger version. If you have tried it and it doesn’t work for you, then you can ignore this suggestion entirely.

I’ve used the projector back in school but I don’t have one. That being said, I could always scan it in, enlarge it, blueline and then print it out and that would work and is a pretty good idea. So thanks!! And luckily, I won’t be working that much in this size so its all good.
