Page 97 – Grudge Match
Emotions are high in this one! Sabrina’s got the fire lit inside her and looking to put the past to rest. Loretta’s looking to make win number four and an entrance into the TV tournament. No matter what, these two are going to give it all they got.
SO….. Page 100 posts next week Monday!! One Hundred. The best I’ve ever done prior to Rival Angels was a 24 pager that took me 15 months to do. I want to thank you all for reading Rival Angels and providing me with invaluable feedback, comments and suggestions and I’d like to ask something from you . Let me know what you’ve liked so far! Do you have a favorite storyline? A favorite angle? Favorite character? Least liked character? Anything I could be doing better? Anything you’d like to see? Match wise or in story, let me know what you think!!
I like “Ultragirl” Sabrina Mancini here, nice.. Retaliate “Ultragirl”
Panel 5: POW!!! Right in the kisser… Pow!!!Right in the kisser!!!
I really disagree on Loretta’s move.. a shove? Come on!! Loretta you can do better than.. and this is not Sumo wrestling.
I agree on Sabrina.. laying down a smackdown on Loretta..
Great Job!!! “Ultragirl”
Loretta, is that the best she can do?
Loretta is not taking Sabrina seriously.. and that’s why Loretta will lose this match..
Surely Loretta, will try to retaliate Sabrina, but I know Sabrina will be prepared for that. like when Loretta try to clothesline Sabrina. Sabrina counters armbar drag take down.. Sabrina can read Loretta’s move now.. hahahah.. nice show.. “Ultagirl”
Or could it be… Loretta attack Sabrina, but Sabrina ultrakicked Loretta out of nowhere, then Sabrina can go for the ultrasplash…1…2…3… that would be humilating for Loretta..
POW!!!Right in the kisser!!!
Add on..
I really “Ultragirl” Sabrina Mancini attitude here rather the one in the fatal four.. comparing her. now and the fatal four way.. here she’s aggressive, while in the fatal four, she hesitated to fight against Brooke.
specially that panel 5: POW!!! Right in the kisser..
I really don’t know.. why the hell, Loretta is relax mode, she really though Sabrina is an easy pick.. she really underestimate Sabrina.. the steaks are high then she’s relax. that’s really a no no in wrestling. and it will be Loretta’s loss.
Saw the banner ad on Drunkduck.. Sabrina VS Loretta Grudge match.. nice… excellent.. really love the background. fire like colors..
Grudge match..hmmm. I really think if it a grudge match, this should be like a “Last Woman standing match” that would be a perfect match for them.. maybe next time…
The Revenge of Loretta Diaz!
“Your overconfidence is your weakness…” 😉
That shove from Loretta wasn’t so much an attack as an insult. Loretta actually thinks she has this match won already.
Sabrina’s slap ought to be a wake-up call for Loretta. Sabrina is not gonna just roll over for her. She’s here to fight!
So, Jeff still doesn’t think Sabrina can win this, eh? Well, it’s gonna be tough for her at least. She now needs to press her advantage and not allow Loratte to recover. Sabrina’s best chance of winning this match is to win it quickly, like Sun did with Sara. Keep hitting fast and hard, and not let Loretta regain her balance.
MGC, I’m glad you liked the page, and how it went down. Loretta is brimming with confidence and really, the shove/slap is nod to a lot of Ric Flair’s matches (Ric Flair being the one getting slapped). That being said, Sabrina also is confidnet and won’t back down. An Ultrakick out of nowhere? *could* happen!
Excellent observation JackAce, Loretta thinks she’s got this match already won and Sabrina has a different opinion on it. Jeff’s mad because he hasn’t picked the right winner in the Upstart matches, so yeah, he thinks he’s got an easy win here. The tempo of this match is about to pick up!
hmmm… I wonder if Loretta VS Jennifer, ever happen.. Loretta will do the same to Jennifer shoving her? and saying to Jennifer “Ready to get beat” or a match Loretta VS Chloe for instance. Loretta will shove Chloe? and sayong to Chloe “Ready to get beat”?
I can safely tell you that Loretta would not start a match with the Hell’s Belles by shoving them. To be fair to Loretta, Sabrina doesn’t have the reputation of the Hell’s Belles either. Loretta is also taking into account the amount of times she’s beaten Sabrina before.
Alright then Albone! I’m all caught up! Lousy work internet. Block me will you…grumble…mumble…stupid…..BAH!
Anywho, great job as usual!!!!
This episode follows the Rival Angels storytelling conventions spot on. Panel two has the unconventional point of view, panel three is going to be a classic with its Confidence vs Arrogance theme, panels four and five feature the color coded impact effects and panel five again has captured the sheer intensity of Sabrina’s slap.
Think about it: you’ve got all these elements in one image: Sabrina is moving forward, Loretta is reeling back, both girls are moving, and the emotions come through, all in one simple drawing. Wow!!
The announcers are staying on message, ( “Loretta’s gonna win” ) that’s gonna change as this grudge match continues.
Loretta’s costume seems to have changed color. It was black in ep 95 and now its not. Is this after the color correcting lights for TV recording are turned on? I have some experience with studio photography and have seen first hand how different lighting affects the images.
Ahhh, as to the quiz:
Favorite storyline: Sabrina becomes Ultragirl, not just as a billboard picture or in a TV spot, but inside herself.
Favorite character: Sun. She is at this point the ‘funnest’. She has a spark, a vitality, that the other Upstarts don’t.
Least liked: That’s a toughie. I don’t care for either Brooke or Commissioner Gabrielle, who both share a habit of plotting unpleasant things, but these events will make for better drama.
Things to do better: boy that is a toughie!! I know that making a comic that looks this good yet looks so simple is not easy, I certainly could not draw this well. The perspective has gotten much better, the character’s arms look right when pointing toward the viewer.
Things to see: Additional dynamic portrayals of action, what if we saw a punch from the point of view of the fist? Seeing things reflected in an extreme close up of someone’s eye? The upcoming ten way match is going to be a challenge ( the Battle Royal ) and will need innovative ways to help the reader keep track of all ten girls. I think one approacjh would be to use a lot of wide panorama panels with little action insets to illustrate dramatic moments, this method would simulate the TV coverage. Think of a basketball game on TV, lots of wide shots with instant closeups of basket shots and fouls. Perhaps ‘closeup action boxes’ sort of like speech baloons illustrating a closeup in a larger panel? I suppose I could draw a mockup as this would be much easier to describe in a stetch.
Other things to see… match programs, TV commercials, the background stuff. Maybe have the upstarts leave a radio playing and an over the top radio spot ( “TONIGHT!!! Will Ultragirl hammer the Carpenter?? BE THERE!!!” ) gets Brooke seething even worse…
Onward to Wednesday! … or is it Woundsday?
Thanks Keith, karma will now reward you handsomely. Thanks for the kind words. 🙂
Hey Roller Derby Fan! Woundsday… LMAO! Thanks for the comments on the page. Loretta’s outfit did slightly change from solid black to deep dark red, but I think going forward its going to be more black. It WAS an attempt to simulate different lighting, but I think the all black works a bit better. Thanks for your thoughts on the first 100 pages. I like the idea you have for the wide shot/instant close ups especially for the battle royal. Showing some of the advertising stuff is another good idea too. Thanks again!
