Chapter 14-Page-03-Burning Bush
I think we can guess what part of Brooke’s game will be improved when she faces Jennifer Needles next.
BLITZ!
In panels 1 and 2 we have BLITZ, a longtime Rival Angels reader and supporter in the Rival Angels Kickstarter campaign to cameo in the story. I know he’s got a background in MMA and he left it up to me, so I thought he’d be perfect as a personal striking coach. I guess you’ll have to ask him if he thinks Brooke is ready for Jennifer. XDΒ Thanks, Blitz!

Ah bonding while in training is easily the oldest fan favorite past time for any wrestler. π
Bonding is always good. Though for some reason wrestlers seem to turn on each other real quick. Unlike me and Rose was are tight. Heck I haven’t even turned on the Red Bomber who is always taking my glory and prestige. I didn’t even chew up her slippers, someone else did….
I think it’s one part respect, two parts commiseration. The person next to you knows what you’re going through.
Panel 4: Brooke

heheheh
You know people don’t like it when I tell someone they are supposed to be my friend….that way. Snickers
Yep, that’s what happens next page. π
I’m a striking coach! Awesome! And her technique DOES look like I’ve been coaching her! So great! And Sabrina appreciates my efforts!
Nailed it, Albone. I love it.
I will call on you the next time we need to strike!
Learning new stuff is always good but learning it right is even better.
I’m glad you like! π
Hey, nice to see Blitz in there. Just don’t tell her to relax her fists in in her guard. I want her burnt out if we ever tangle hehee
Brooke needs to chill though. Jennifer knows her and will use that. Us reds are smart that way π
I actually default to my Chinese martial arts training and my old school boxing mentality on the subject of relaxing to save energy.
1. If you have to relax to save energy in a fight, your conditioning isn’t good enough. Fix it.
2. If a fight goes on so long you run out of energy, despite decent conditioning, you’re not being aggressive enough. Fix it.
If she fights the way I teach her, she won’t have time to relax! Besides, she’s a wrestler. She won’t spend a lot of time in a striking stance. I expect her to use it more as a setup and transition than her core fighting method. Not that I’ll let her slack off…
3. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Unless it’s broke, in which case why haven’t you fixed it yet?
4. Fixitfixitfixitfixit! Fix it!
5. Repeat whichever other step you feel like. They’re all good.
snickers*
Why do I hear voice percussion in the background?
and not Ka-Ching!
I agree being able to last a long time counts for a lot in a fight
Me….I like quick strikes and retreats to keep people off balance.
Remember Brooke is top heavy so if you can bump her she will go over and you got her.
As for being evil smart I know that…..learning and watching I can use that info against you in our fights.
For what it’s worth, from those panels, I’d say her foundation still needs a little work, and she seems likely to fight more like a classic orthodox boxer than me – her left hand is unlikely to hit as hard as her right. I’d still tell her that she’s not ready for someone like Kat Smith, at least until her stance is solid.
Needles, though? Brooke’s striking looks to be more than enough to do terrible things to Jennifer Needles.
You would think she would be working on wrestling moves
nah she’s working on the William Regal “power of the punch” technique- i mean she already has the brass knuckles after all. sabrina seemed a bit unsympathetic in panel 5 though for some reason.
She DID seem unsympathetic, didn’t she? XD
They’re all works in progress. π
Angry sounds are an essential part of punching!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!
See, fearsome.
*nod*

Baby ‘Brina Watch!!
Sabrina-Ripley’s grasp of multiple choice seems to be more or less the same as mine. In an effort to help me make ‘tough’ decisions, I have taken to hiding a penny in one hand, and getting Baby Bear to pick one… because just flipping the coin is just far too easy.
Sabrina-Ripley, however, consistently picks… both.
Which is of no help at all.
*shakes head*
Ha! She’s a philosopher and declining your dichotomy.
Watch out when she starts board games!
Hehehe, she’s a smart little bundle of cute. She’s learned that if she picks both, there’s no way she can not pick the right one.
Baby Brina is a shrewd one. At least she’s pointing and, you know, taking.
Sabrina’s going, “Why did you need / use brass knuckles in the first place?” That’s why the eye-rolls.
You seem to have the measure of our little Ultragirl.
Sabby and Brooke team up for the take down of their rivals. I’m buying front row seats for that match. π
Since I’m training them for these matches, you know I’ve GOT to see this match live…
It should be a pretty good contest. π
Well, it’s easy to tell Brooke’s mad… though that could hurt her more than help her. She’s gotta learn to focus it otherwise the Belle’s are just going to use it to toy with, then beat her
That’s why good striking techniques are important. If you don’t get overextended and vulnerable as you attack, there’s no advantage to making you angry. They’re just making someone who can beat them into gravy that much more eager to do it.
Though I guess it could keep Brooke so focused on Needles that she doesn’t see Kat coming up behind. That’s why you wreck a target quick.
It sounds to me like you’re saying if I fail to get you angry then there’s no advantage in getting you angry. One of the points of the head game is to get the opponent to make mistakes that make them vulnerable that they might not risk otherwise. That happens a lot of way, overextending, lack of focus, misreading, etc. Shamrock and Ortiz got that down. So does Rousey.
The trick is to focus on training the stance to the point where you sink into it properly when angry. My stance actually tends to improve as I get angrier, and I chose that stance precisely because it’s insurance against those sorts of mistakes. She might make one of those mistakes when grappling, but I’m doing my best to make sure that when she’s striking, she’s covered, regardless of her mindset.
I think getting angry is kind of a mixed bag. Nate and Nick Diaz fight angry and they can be downright unstoppable. Ronda seems to as well. I saw a fight where Nick was slapping his opponent in the face and calling him garbage. I don’t know if Nick’s opponent was mad or not, but it sure didn’t help him one way or the other. I’ve also seen Gray Manyard and Titlo Ortiz fight guys who fought ‘backwards’ and they were very upset in the fight but they still won.
In football, MMA, etc., I’ve always been a big fan of coaching. It can make a huge difference, but no matter how great the coaching, it needs the right person/people to execute. And that’s what it really comes down to, and seeing how effective it can be.
That’s right! My job is important! *preens*
I think a big part of coaching is the ability to find the right person to coach. If the coach and the student don’t match well, both in personality and in style, the end result won’t be at peak potential.
I think my favorite part of this update is that I can see enough detail to see where my student is at, and she’s coming along well, but I can see exactly where there’s more work to do. Brooke is physically and strategically a fantastic match for my style, exactly as I like to use it, but her attitudes and mine aren’t in sync. She’ll get the basics well eventually, and she’s making great progress toward that, and they’ll be very effective for her, but she probably won’t get the subtle adjustments that I could teach her. (I can clearly see from those two panels where I omitted certain things, even though you weren’t aware of them, Albone. Coincidence, but beautiful.) By contrast, there’s things I could teach Sabrina that I’d never teach Brooke, and things that I’d teach people like Sun or Snow Kitten that I couldn’t teach Sabrina, even though none of them match my style as well as Brooke physically or strategically, and I’d have to make certain adjustments to allow for that.
